Lexington has two cemeteries: Oak Grove and Evergreen. Last year, amid controversy surrounding a nearby planned development on Spotswood Drive, residents said that Oak Grove Cemetery needs to be expanded.
The city has found a way to expand both cemeteries–by buying back small pieces of property from neighboring residents. City Council approved the purchase of two parcels at 14 and 16 Houston St. last Thursday. They also approved a much larger expansion of historically Black Evergreen Cemetery.
