The federal jury trial for John Higgins, the former superintendent of the Rockbridge Regional Jail, has been postponed for the fourth time.
Last week, his lawyer filed a motion to continue the trial based on a substantial amount of new discovery documents.
The trial, which was originally scheduled for over a year ago, was postponed from Dec. 9 to April 20.
Higgins faces 21 charges, including fraud, bribery and inmate abuse.
Last month, a U.S. district judge sentenced the jail’s former head nurse, Gary Andrew Hassler, to a year in prison for falsifying an incident report about injuries an inmate suffered in a beating by other prisoners.
