A super blue blood moon was somewhat visible around 7 a.m. Jan. 31 in Rockbridge County. The super moon featured the concurrence of a blue moon, the second full moon of a month, a super moon, which occurs when the moon is closest to the earth, and a total lunar eclipse, also called a blood moon, that occurs when the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the Earth. The events are not considered rare individually, but the convergence of all three has not happened in over 150 years in North America.
