Ten Washington and Lee University students were left homeless after a fire destroyed the house on Randolph and Massie streets Feb. 10. The fire apparently started when a cigarette butt was left on the wooden stairway. An improperly cleaned chimney, according to the Lexington Fire Department, caused another fire last week on Fuller Street. Fire Chief Ty Dickerson offers several tips to ensure safety when heating a home.
