The Associated Press declared incumbent State Senator John Edwards (D) the winner in the race for the 21st state Senate District.  Edwards, a Democrat, was challenged by Republican Nancy Dye and independent Don Caldwell. The race was closely watched because the outcome could affect the balance of power in the Republican-controlled state Senate.

Edwards led with 51 percent of the votes to Dye’s 43 percent.  Caldwell, a prosecutor and former Democratic Party officer, had just six percent of the vote.  The district includes Roanoke and Blacksburg.

Incumbent Creigh Deeds (D) was unopposed for his race in the 25th Senate District, which includes the cities of Buena Vista, Charlottesville, Covington, and Lexington, and the counties, Alleghany, Bath, Highland, Nelson, and Rockbridge and part of Albemarle.
