DANVILLE (AP) — A Confederate flag will continue to fly on the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History grounds.

The museum’s board had asked the city to remove the flag from the grounds. City manager Joe King said in a news release that the city determined it doesn’t have the authority under Virginia law to remove the flag.

Councilman Buddy Rawley told The Danville Register & Bee that, after reading the state code, removing the flag is a non-issue.

The museum planned to move the flag inside to be part of an exhibit of the history of the Confederate flag. The exhibit will be installed in early 2015.

Museum executive director Cara Burton told the newspaper that the request to remove the flag was based on feedback from residents and visitors.
