Former Washington and Lee University President John Wilson died Saturday at 81. During his 12 years as president Wilson led the school’s transition to coeducation. He also oversaw the opening of  the Lenfest Center for the Arts. In 2006, The John and Anne Wilson Hall was opened and dedicated in his honor. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in Lee Chapel.

Wendy Lovell, assistant director for community-based learning and communications for W&L’s Shepherd Program, was in W&L’s second co-ed class. She said her college experience would not have been possible without Wilson’s leadership.
