The statues were taken down over the summer, and an inquiry into the contract between the city and a Richmond-area construction company owner has been initiated.

While the City of Lexington does not own any public memorials, localities across the Commonwealth are struggling to decide what to do with monuments and statues.

Attorneys for the city wanted the case dismissed because of a state law protecting memorials for war veterans.
