The legislation, inspired by the Natural Bridge Zoo case, has been sent to Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who hasn’t indicated if she’ll sign them. Hybridization would also have to be stopped at zoos if the bills become law.

The zoo’s owner and former owners appeared in court this week, along with the elephant trainer. Owner Gretchen Mogensen and two former owners, Karl and Deborah Mogensen, say they are still trying to find an attorney.
Gretchen Mogensen remains in custody after being indicted Feb. 3 on 18 new counts of animal cruelty and forgery.
