Buena Vista’s 40-year-old wastewater treatment plant is discharging excessive levels of ammonia into the Maury River every week, violating the permitted amount. The plant is now beginning to test if adding chemicals into the treatment process will reduce the ammonia levels. The city estimates a full overhaul of the plant would cost $25 million.
