Buena Vista Police Chief Wayne Handley will retire, effective in June, according to city officials.
Handley became chief in 2023 after Richard Hartman pleaded no contest to embezzlement.
Handley previously worked in the Norfolk Police Department for 20 years. He then joined the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office, where he worked for more than two years before coming to BV.
The city will launch a search for a new chief.
Handley focused on drug rehabilitation, homelessness and domestic violence during his tenure in BV.
He plans to stay in the area.
