Wildfires across the state were difficult to contain this fall due to widespread drought conditions that made forests more flammable, according to the Virginia Department of Forestry. While rain doused Bedford County’s 11,000-acre wildfire last week and helped to contain the flames, the precipitation came too late to save local livestock farmers from dry conditions. They are adopting a variety of strategies — from reducing the size of their herds to planting cover crops that help soil retain moisture — to make ends meet this season.
