Virginia experienced higher voter turnout this past Election Day than would normally be expected. Lexington election volunteer Trina Welsheimer said voter turnout was steady throughout the day. People braved the weather in rain coats and carrying umbrellas to make sure that their ballots were cast. More than 47 percent of Virginia’s nearly 5.5 million registered voters cast ballots. Locally, in Buena Vista, about 40 percent of the 3,838 registered voters came out. In Rockbridge County, 14,345 were registered to vote and 55 percent of them voted.
