John Winfrey, independent candidate for the 24th District House of Delegates seat, is running for office to boot out Republican Del. Ben Cline and fix problems with healthcare and gerrymandering. At 82 years old, Winfrey is running a rousing campaign, handing out thousands of lawn signs, attending almost every public community event and riding in the Buena Vista parade. With no endorsement from either party, Winfrey acknowledges that he has little chance of winning. Yet he still soldiers on, convinced that the issues – and his opponent – are worth the fight.
