NEWPORT NEWS (AP) — Authorities are searching for a detainee they say escaped from Riverside Regional Medical Center.

The Newport News Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that 32-year-old Thomas Brabham of Emporia escaped Wednesday from the Newport News facility.

Media outlets reported that Brabham was arrested on March 25 in connection with 14 burglaries. He is facing 44 charges, including burglary and grand larceny.

The sheriff’s office says Brabham was being held at Newport News City Jail, but he was taken to the hospital on March 28 for medical attention. He was undergoing physical therapy at the hospital when he escaped.

The escape is under investigation.
