HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — State transportation officials have reiterated their promise to expand the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, which serves the Norfolk-Newport News area.

Officials met with more than 300 interested contractors and developers in Hampton on Monday, according to the Newport News-based Daily Press.

The project would widen a 12-mile stretch of Interstate 64 between Norfolk and Hampton. Plans call for four of the tunnel lanes to be toll-free and three to toll cars carrying only one individual. Tolls would change based on time of day and traffic patterns.

Virginia Department of Transportation commissioner Charlie Fitzpatrick said calls for proposals would be accepted next year, with contracts to be awarded in 2019.

The expansion is budgeted at between $3.5 billion and $4 billion.
