Rockbridge County officials postponed the closures of 22 unstaffed waste-collection centers after the Board of Supervisors on Monday backed away from a proposal to build a staffed collection center in Fancy Hill. After hearing comments at Monday’s meeting from neighbors, including the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Virginia Gold Orchard, the supervisors voted 3-2 against moving forward with the Fancy Hill site. County officials are looking for a new location to build the staffed collection center. County Administrator Spencer Suter said the closures of unstaffed collection centers are delayed indefinitely, and that staffed centers will have new hours, beginning this week. Staffed centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and on Wednesday through Saturday each week, with new hours on Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m. The centers will be closed on Tuesdays. Bulky items like sofas and mattresses will now be accepted at staffed centers, and brush will only be accepted at the county landfill.
