The Virginia Flaggers and a local property owner have been told to take down a 90-foot flagpole on West Route 60. The Richmond-based Flaggers group, which is dedicated to commemorating the Confederacy, raised a 20- by 30-foot Confederate flag at 60 West Pawn about 10 days ago. Chris Slaydon, Assistant Director of Community Development for Rockbridge County, sent 60 West Pawn owner Brian Rowsey and the Flaggers a zoning letter, stating that they did not obtain county approval before installing the flagpole. The flagpole also does not meet county setback regulations. If Rowsey or the Flaggers do not file a zoning appeal before Feb. 16, then the flagpole must be removed by March 6.
