Two candidates are running unopposed for re-election for the Glasgow Town Council. Michael L. Turner and James E. “Sonny” Williams are running for two of the three available council positions.
Voters will have the option to write in a name for the third available seat, now held by Roger Funkhouser. He decided not to run for re-election after serving on the council for seven years. Glasgow’s town manager, Bill Rolfe, said this is the first time that Glasgow town council does not have a candidate running for all of the seats available.
Glasgow’s council comprises six members whose terms are staggered.
Turner has been a council member since 2008 and has served as chair of the ordinance committee and finance committee. Turner is a retired public school teacher and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Turner is an usher at Union Baptist Church.
Williams recently completed his first full term on the council and has served on the ordinance committee, the water and sewer committee, and the parks and recreation committee. Williams is the owner of Williams’ Burial Vaults & Monuments, attends Glasgow Baptist Church and is a member of the town’s Ruritan Club.
Neither candidate was available for comment. Glasgow residents will vote Tuesday at the Glasgow Library. The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
