Lexington and Rockbridge County both have animal control ordinances that fine people for not registering their animals. Those fines are on the rise in the past month. The ordinances require people to vaccinate their dogs and to keep them on leashes while in public areas, among other things. Community officials say that these ordinances keep the community safe while also holding pet owners more accountable.
