The highest risk for wildfires began this week and continues through April. Rockbridge County Forester Karen Stanley says the ground is usually drier, and stronger winds make forests more vulnerable. Open outdoor fires are illegal except between 4 p.m. and midnight. Violators face fines of up to $500.
