For the first time in decades, the Buena Vista Police Department will recruit a chief and assistant chief from outside of the department. After 21 years of service, Darrell Slagle stepped down as police chief last Friday. Jay Patterson, who served the force for 30 years, now is head of the department until an interim chief is hired. City Manager Jay Scudder said neither man was forced to leave.
