The U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday that it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays to help alleviate its grim financial condition, but Saturday lobby hours will continue.

The service expects the Saturday mail cutback to begin the week of Aug. 5 and to save about $2 billion annually, said Postmaster General and CEO Patrick Donahoe.

“Our financial condition is urgent,” Donahoe said in a press conference.

Under the new plan, mail will be delivered to houses and businesses Monday through Friday only. On Saturdays mail will still be delivered to post office boxes.

Post offices that are now open on Saturdays, like the one in Lexington, will remain open on Saturdays after the new plan goes into effect.
