East Nelson Street in Lexington will be closed between Randolph and Davidson streets beginning Feb. 5 as the Nelson Street bridge is dismantled and replaced.
Washington Street will serve as the primary detour route while the bridge is being rebuilt. Fifty-eight parking spots on Washington Street have been removed to make room for increased traffic.
The Lexington City Council approved a temporary traffic control plan for the duration of the project last month. The city will repaint Washington Street’s center lines, add extra traffic calming measures near Washington and Lee University and change the signals at the intersection of Jefferson and Washington streets to facilitate left turns.
The bridge project is expected to be completed in mid-December.
