While raising chickens is legal in Rockbridge County, citizens and officials of Lexington continue to argue over whether to allow the birds in the city.

A 1918 advertisement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that encourages raising backyard chickens has been used by supporters of the Lexington chicken legislation to sway the city.

Local author Patricia Foreman hosted a chicken workshop at the old courthouse last weekend to rally support for a change in the city ordinances and to teach residents how to raise their own flocks. Foreman believes it is only a matter of time before chickens will be allowed in the city. Other residents are not so sure. Council Member Bob Lera worries that having chickens in Lexington runs counter to the image that many visitors and residents have of the city.
