Local women are still upset by the closing of Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital’s birthing center nearly two years ago. Since the closing, most area women must travel outside of Rockbridge County to deliver their babies.
Hospital officials cited the lack of doctors and declining number of local births for the closing, but local childbirth experts fear the danger of pregnant women travelling. The closest maternity units are more than 40 miles away.
