ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Defense contractor ITT Exelis plans to cut jobs at its plant in Roanoke County.

WDBJ-TV (http://bit.ly/slNAJq ) says the cuts announced Thursday are expected to occur in early 2012.

Company spokesman Ken Darby says the number of jobs to be cut hasn’t been determined. Both hourly and salaried workers will be affected.

Darby attributes the job cuts to forecast reductions in defense spending.

The plant produces night vision equipment and employs about 1,400 workers.
