Washington and Lee University Art History professor Pamela Simpson passed away at her home Tuesday evening.
Simpson was considered a “trail blazer” by those who knew her. She was the first female tenure-track professor at Washington and Lee. She also helped the university shift from an all-male to a co-ed school.
“Simpson was the most important person in my life outside of my family,” said Art History Professor George Bent. “She taught me how to be a teacher. She taught me how to be a scholar, but she also taught me how to be a member of this community.”
Simpson was also known for her contributions to the Lexington and Rockbridge communities – serving on Project Horizon, the Rockbridge Historical Society and the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic, among other groups.
She was the Earnest Williams Professor of Art History. A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 10 at the R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church in Lexington.
