Monacan Indian Nation wins fight for federal recognition

President Trump signed a bill on Monday to officially recognize six Native American tribes in Virginia. The local Monacan Indian Nation has been fighting for federal recognition for 18 years. The tribe can now preserve its culture, create its own laws and have better access to scholarships and healthcare. Local members of the Monacan Indian Nation see this as a step in the right direction, one they wished their ancestors could have lived to see.
